It is common for most employees on the base to arrive to work early and beat the traffic in the evening, however, I am a late riser :) so I have found that 830-5 works better for me! Despite being left in the dust by my co-workers, I discovered something special today.
Precisely at 1700 hours [5pm :-D] a familiar melody sounds over the loud speakers across the base. The Star Spangled Banner rings its powerful sound and all around our soldiers pay their respects. I walk out to my car and as though they have been frozen in time, they stand at attention on the sidewalk and in the parking lot or even saluting while in their cars.
Today, I sat there observing the honor those soldiers gave to our country and its firm symbol. Never had I been able to really appreciate a respect for one's country so closely. I found it so refreshing to see such gratitude amongst the business of life and the daily routine. Although a simple gesture, I can't help but wonder how our country would be if we daily reflected on what the national anthem meant and what our flag stands for.
Thank you Lord for my country and thank you for the freedom of being an American!
